2020國立交通大學第一屆三分鐘英語學術簡報競賽

【WHAT’S 3MT? 源起】

Three Minute Thesis ( 3MT® ) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland ( UQ ). PhD students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

Developed by The University of Queensland ( UQ ) in 2008, enthusiasm for the 3MT concept has developed rapidly and 3MT competitions are now held in over 900 universities and institutions across 85 countries worldwide.

三分鐘學術簡報（ 3MT® ）源起於澳洲昆士蘭大學，是一項國際性學術簡報競賽，已在超過八十五個國家、900多所全球高等學府舉辦（ 如哈佛大學、牛津大學、新加坡國立大學等 ）。競賽中，研究生透過三分鐘學術簡報與不同研究領域的聽眾交流，強化學術溝通表達能力。

國立交通大學於2019年起獲授權辦理，邀請產界、學界之專家學者擔任決選評審，亦提供交大同學賽前培訓講座，以期研究生能將學術研究（ 硬實力 ）與語言溝通（ 軟實力 ）相互結合，提升國際競爭力。

【TARGET PARTICIPANTS 參賽資格】

Currently-enrolled graduate students who are conducting original research in the University System of Taiwan ( UST* )

活動期間已完成註冊之台灣聯合大學系統研究生，且正進行原創性研究或已有研究相關論文發表者。

*UST includes National Central University, National Chiao Tung University, National Tsing Hua University and National Yang-Ming University.

【HOW 3MT WORKS? 比賽如何進行】

There are two rounds of competition.

Preliminary round:

Submit the a video-taped audition presentation and the file of your slide.

Ten to twelve candidates will be selected to compete in the final event.

* If any finalist is unable to attend the final event, the next runner-up in the preliminary round will take his or her place.

Final round:

The selected candidates will take turns to present on stage in front of a live audience.

本活動之競賽流程包含兩個階段。在初選階段，參賽者必須先行錄製並繳交三分鐘學術簡報之影片連結及投影片。經評審老師審核，初選積分最高之十～十二位參賽者將晉級決選。決選當日如參賽者不克出席，參賽資格將依序遞補。決選將邀集觀眾於公開場合舉辦。

【RULES 比賽規則】

Rules:

• A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted ( no slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration ).
• No additional electronic media ( e.g. sound and video files ) are permitted.
• No additional props ( e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment ) are permitted.
• Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
• Presentations are to be spoken word ( e.g. no poems, raps or songs ).
• Presentations are to commence from the stage.
• Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech.
• The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

比賽需遵從以下規則：

• 參賽者限使用一張靜態投影片。簡報投影片必須搭配口頭報告，並於開始報告時放映。
• 投影片不得包含任何切換特效與動畫。
• 投影片不得包含聲音或影片檔。
• 簡報中不得使用任何輔助器具，例如簡報器、戲服、樂器、實驗或桌椅等。
• 簡報時間應以三分鐘為限，逾時者將喪失參賽資格。
• 簡報僅限於口說，不得以詩詞朗誦或歌曲唱誦之方式呈現。
• 簡報必須於比賽規定之講台上進行。
• 簡報計時始於參賽者上台後所說的第一個字或做的第一個動作。
• 比賽結果以評審委員之決議為依據。

【JUDGING CRITERIA 評選標準】

〈Judging Criteria〉

1. Comprehension & Content:

• Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?
• Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes?
• Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
• Was the thesis topic, research significance, results/impact and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
• Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation – or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

2. Engagement & Communication:

• Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
• Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research?
• Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
• Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience’s attention?
• Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
• Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation – was it clear, legible, and concise?

評審委員將依以下兩個主要面向進行評選。

1. 內容方面：

• 簡報內容是否包含研究背景與研究問題，並說明其重要性？
• 簡報內容是否包含主要研究結果與結論？
• 簡報呈現是否依據合理之邏輯順序？
• 簡報內容是否讓不具備專業知識之一般聽眾理解？
• 講者是否避免使用艱澀術語，並能適當解釋專有名詞，同時提供足夠的背景知識來論述重點？
• 講者是否平均分配報告時間，涵蓋各項研究重點，而非僅偏重於單一項目，或整場簡報進行過於倉促？

2. 主題吸引程度與溝通方面：

• 簡報主題講解是否引起觀眾興趣？
• 講者是否低估或過度解讀研究結果？
• 講者是否展現學術研究之熱情？
• 講者是否能吸引並維持觀眾的注意力？
• 講者是否台風穩健，眼神與音量控制得宜，講述速度不疾不徐，態度表現泰然自若？
• 投影片是否清楚易讀、簡潔明確，並能有效輔助簡報之進行？

【PREPARATION & REGISTRATION 參賽準備 & 報名方式】

〈初選階段〉

學習如何進行三分鐘學術簡報：

• 參考三分鐘學術簡報官方網站（ http://threeminutethesis.org/3mt-showcase ）。
• 參考交通大學三分鐘英語學術簡報競賽網頁( https://nctu3mt.web.nctu.edu.tw/ )之相關公告。
• 觀看競賽規則說明及參加賽前3MT培訓講座。

製作參賽檔案：

• 準備一張不超過 5MB 的靜態投影片。
• 以 MP4 或其他 YouTube 可接受之格式錄製一段影片。
• 影片開始需以英文介紹參賽者姓名、系所，學校及簡報主題。介紹時間將不計入報告時間之三分鐘內。

報名方式：

• 於 2020年11月9日下午 5 點前註冊並繳交影片連結及投影片檔案：
• 將影片上傳至 YouTube，並點選下拉選單，將其設定改為「不公開」。影片一經上傳，切勿重新上傳。
• 點選活動報名連結（ https://forms.gle/ncB7QJUQqYkTdcBV6 )。
• 填入個人報名資料、YouTube 影片連接網址，並上傳投影片檔案至雲端資料夾，檔名請以學校＋姓名＋學號命名，
  例如：交通大學周星星0876543 ( https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/155o5dRmcBvUHSPYNGuN2Ve-1c8XJXgxJ?usp=sharing )。
• 資料填妥後，按「繳交」即可。
• 檢查是否收到交通大學語言教學與研究中心寄發之確認信。

〈決選階段〉

• 決選名單於2020年11月13日前公布在活動網頁。
• 入選者應於2020年11月19日中午12點前，以電子郵件通知交通大學語言教學與研究中心（ cain@nctu.edu.tw ）參賽與否，並於決賽當天抽籤決定參賽順序。
• 投影片內容或簡報標題可微調。

【PRIZES 競賽獎勵】

競賽獎勵包含首獎、貳獎、參獎及觀眾票選獎各一名，將於決選後頒發。

• Winner 首獎獎品: Apple i-Pad Pro 一台
• First-runner up 貳獎獎品: Apple Watch 一支
• Second-runner up 參獎獎品: Nintendo Switch 一台
• People’s Choice Award 觀眾票選獎獎品: Apple AirPods 一副
