The 2021 Rules

Entries close on 15 November 2021, but to be eligible for ‘every fifth entry free’, you must enter by 8 November 2021 (see rules below).

ALSO NOTE: Your entry must have been photographed on or after 1 January 2019 – this is unchanged from last year’s rules.

1. The International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards (Awards) incorporates the International Landscape Photographer of the Year (Photographer), the International Landscape Photograph of the Year (Photograph), and the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards Book (Book).

2. The Awards are open to all photographers, professional and amateur, around the world. By entering the Awards, You accept these Competition Rules and their Terms and Conditions.

THE COMPETITION

3. Closing Date: Entries and the Entry Fee must be received by 15 November 2021 (or 8 November 2021 if you want a free entry – see below).

4. The Entry Fee is US $25 per image and if you enter on or prior to 8 November 2021, every fifth entry is free. So, enter and pay for four images, get one free. Enter and pay for a further four entries and the tenth entry is free. There’s no limit to the number of images you can enter. If you wish to be eligible for the International Landscape Photographerof the Year Award, you will need to enter at least four different entries. However, a single Entry is all that’s required for inclusion in the Book, or to win the International Landscape Photograph of the Year Award.

Entries will be accepted after 8 November until 15 November 2021. For the final week of entries, the entry fee is still US $25 per image entry, but there are no free entries.

5. To enter, you must upload your Entry(s) via the Award’s website, following the on-screen instructions.

6. The judges are looking for photographs that epitomise the art and craft of landscape photography. This will mean different things to different judges. Your job is to impress the judges.

7. The Entries presented for judging must be photographic in origin (taken with a camera), but there are no restrictions on post-production except that any post-production must be the work of the entrant. You cannot have someone else edit or work on the image for you. We consider this part of the art of landscape photography.

8. Entries must be from original exposures taken on or after 1 January 2019 (to acknowledge the impact of COVID, we have left this the same as last year). You can enter more than one Entry of the same subject, but if two entries are considered similar by the judges, only one of them will be eligible for the Book and Photographer awards. The decision as to which entry will be included in the book is at the discretion of the organisers.

9. Entries must comply with the following specifications:

• AdobeRGB colour space, 8-bit;

• Measure between 4000 and 5000 pixels on the longest side (we need large files because they may be printed), 300 dpi.

• Be saved as a JPEG (recommended setting 9 or 10).

• There is a maximum file size of 6MB, so for particularly detailed subjects, you may need to reduce the JPEG compression to setting 8.

JUDGING

10. Judging will be blind. This means no names, titles, captions or other indicators can be visible in or on the Entry. However, all your details should remain in the metadata to protect your image.

11. Each Entry will be scored by 5 separate judges. The Organiser reserves the right to replace the nominated judges should the need arise.

12. The judging process is as follows:

• Each Entry will be given a score out of 100 by each Judge.

• The Judges’ scores will be totalled to give a final score out of 500, then divided by 5 and presented to you as a percentage figure out of 100.

• The 101 Entries with the highest scores will be accepted for publication in the Book (the Top 101) (unless an entrant has entered two photographs that are very similar, as determined at the organisers’ discretion). Furthermore, any one entrant may not have more than four entries accepted into the top 101.

• The 20 Entries with the highest score will be judged a second time, with the highest score being deemed the International Landscape Photograph of the Year. If the top 20 Entries include two or more photographs by the one entrant that are very similar, as determined by the organisers, the highest scoring entry will be used and the other entry(s) excluded.

• The 10 Portfolio Entries with the highest aggregate will be judged separately. A Portfolio Entry comprises an Entrant’s highest scoring four Entries, as long as one of those Entries is in the Top 101. If the four highest scoring Entries for an Entrant include two or more photographs that are very similar, as determined by the organisers, the highest scoring entry will be used and the other entry(s) excluded. This may result in the Entrant’s portfolio no longer being in the top 10, depending on the scores for his/her other entries. The judges will vote for the portfolio that best represents the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. This will be a process of consultation and discussion.

• If an entrant places first, second or third in the Photographer of the Year Award (with a portfolio of four images), this makes them ineligible for the Photograph of the Year Award (single image) and the Special Awards. Similarly if an entrant places first, second or third in the Photograph of the Year Award, this makes them ineligible for the Special Awards.

• In event of a tie for the Book, Photographer or Photograph awards, the images will be re-judged to produce the winner(s).

• Special Awards will be presented at the discretion of the judges following a process of consultation and discussion.

13. Winners will be published on-line at the Awards’ website and in the Book, both in print and electronically.

2021 International Landscape Photograph

Will We See Your Photos In Our 2021 Edition? Enter Now!

We know the past 12 months has been ‘challenging’ for many landscape photographers. Quite a few of us haven’t been travelling much at all, but on the other hand, others have been rediscovering landscapes closer to home. And if we have been locked down for a while due to COVID, we’ve certainly had an opportunity to edit and refine our best images – having a passion has made some aspects of the restrictions that much easier.

So, as we leave COVID behind (eventually) and hoping you are as passionate as ever about landscape photography, now is the time to enter your best work into our 2021 International Landscape Photographer of the Year awards.

We really believe there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your photos published alongside the world’s best. And the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards book is a real book – printed on paper and bound between hard covers, but of course, you can also see the wonderful flip-book presentations here on the website. Being published is a mark of success!

This is our eighth year of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards and the main aim of our Award is to be one of the Top 101 landscape photographs of the year. This gives you a place in our exclusive book which is published online and can be purchased as a ‘real’ hard-cover paper publication as well (it’s proudly printed by Momento Pro).

There is US$10,000 in cash prizes for the top three photographs and top three photographers (requiring a portfolio of at least four entries), a printed copy of the book from Momento Pro, and a NiSi filter outfit. And there are five special subject prizes winning a print from Created For Life!

So, what’s the process? Your job is to impress our five judges, including last year’s winner Kelvin Yuen. And entry is easy – just size your file to 4000-5000 pixels on the longest side, save it as a JPEG and upload it. The entry fee remains unchanged at US$25 per image, and if you enter by 8 November 2021, every fifth entry is free. Final entries are accepted until 15 November 2021.

When the competition closes, our judges will use calibrated computer monitors to judge each photograph, giving it a score out of 100. Judges can open each and every entry and view it pixel for pixel on their monitor if required – and this is invariably done before they give their higher scores. Technique and craft are just as important as creativity for the top awards.

Once the first round of judging is completed, we have a score for each entry out of 500, expressed as a percentage. The top 115 odd photos are selected and checked to ensure they comply with the rules (not taken before 1 January 2019, for example) and that there are not two or more photographs that are very similar (we are looking for variety). There is also a limit on the number of photographs a single entrant can have in the Top 101 – no more than four, just to share the experience around. In the past, we’ve found that selecting the top 115 to 120 allows us to end up with the top 101, taking into account these adjustments.

We then move into the next round of judging, as outlined in our rules. The judges are engaged a second time to determine the Photographerof the Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd), the Photograph of the Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and five special subject awards. This can take two or even three rounds of scoring and comment before the judges come up with their final result.

Once we have the results, we’ll contact all the top prize winners, but we won’t be telling them if they won the big prize or just one of the special prizes. We need a little background information about the winners for the book. If you don’t hear from us before the winners are announced, it doesn’t mean you’re not in the Top 101, it just means you didn’t win one of the prizes.

At this stage, we have everything we need and so it’s into production. Our art director is given the photographs and the text and she weaves her magic to produce the book. We aim to have all this ready so we can announce the winners on 15 January 2022.

So, that’s the road map! We hope you enjoy getting your entries ready for our Awards and the best of luck!
