The mutual exchange between Taiwan and the United States has developed continuously over the past 40 years. Through the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), both countries have cooperated in various aspects such as economy, trade, education, and culture.

In 1999, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) and AIT collaborated to establish the only American Center in Taiwan. Its mission is to enhance the mutual understanding between southern Taiwan and the United States. Since its inception, the Sun Yat-sen America Center (SYSAC) has provided students and the general public opportunities to learn about American culture, business, education, and values through activities such as speeches, cultural events, seminars, and exhibitions.

Since 2013, NSYSU and AIT have been hosting English speech contests annually to enhance and improve students’ English oral proficiency and, at the same time, facilitate cultural exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S. Since last year, the competition has taken a new form, oral presentation, for students to express their ideas about the Future, hence FutureTalk. Students are expected to express their innovative ideas to foster U.S.-Taiwan Collaboration.
