All artists who submitted to our Open Call 2023 will be notified by February 15, 2023 of acceptance for the Guest Curated Exhibition opening March 12, 2023.

Special Virtual Exhibition Opportunity for All Submitting Artists!

Submissions Considered For:

  • Exhibition curated by nico wheadon to take place March 12 – April 30, 2023
  • Solo exhibitions curated by ECOCA
  • Digital Grace, a rotating online exhibition platform, as well as other online programming and exhibitions
  • Thematic group exhibitions
  • Project space for video, installation, and experimental works
  • Perspectives Gallery @ Whitney Center, Hamden, CT (curated by Debbie Hesse)
  • Other off-site and online opportunities
  • Special interviews and social media features

Eligibility & Terms

  • Artists may submit up to five works
  • New media, film, or video works are encouraged, though equipment is limited, supplemental equipment welcomed
  • Artists are responsible for hand-delivery of artwork
  • All artwork accepted must be ready to hang or install
  • We do not ship work, see exception below**
  • The fee may not apply to entry fees for other specific calls.
  • Artists retain 70% of the proceeds from any work sold.
  • $35 app fee: Includes 1 – 5 artworks
  • Deadline: Sunday, January 15, 2023 11:59 pm EST
  • Please note ECOCA cannot insure any single work valued at more than $10,000.

ECOCA is pleased to announce guest curator, nico wheadon,will curate an exhibition from our Open Call 2023 submissions. The exhibition will run from March 12 – April 30, 2023.

nico wheadonis an independent arts consultant, curator, educator, and writer based in New Haven, CT. She is also founder and principal ofbldg fund, LLC; a visiting critic at the Yale School of Art; and a board member at The National Academy of Design, and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. An advocate for BIPOC and womxn artists in allendeavors, she uses her myriad platforms to deepen the canon of contemporary art, whilst cultivating an engaged community of practice.

As a consultant, nico delivers cultural strategy to artist-entrepreneurs, cultural institutions, government agencies, and philanthropic foundations—her approach is informed by her unique perspective as a practitioner working across sectors. An independent curator, nico has recently curated exhibitions at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Welancora Gallery, Sapar Contemporary, and Future Fairs, and has supported strategic initiatives at the Legacy Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Arizona State University Art Museum, the Barrett Art Center, and the Association of Art Museum Curators. nico is a contributing writer to Artnet News, The Brooklyn Rail, and C&, and is the author of Museum Metamorphosis: Cultivating Change Through Cultural Citizenship, published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers and The American Alliance of Museums Press.

In recent posts, nico served as an Adjunct Professor of Art at Brown University, Barnard College, and Hartford Art School (2016 – 2021); Inaugural Executive Director of NXTHVN (2019-2020); Inaugural Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2014-2019); Curatorial Director of Rush Arts Gallery (2007-2010); and Curatorial Assistant at The Studio Museum in Harlem (2006-2007). nico holds an MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship from Goldsmiths, University of London (2011), and a BA in Art-Semiotics from Brown University (2006).
