2022 Polestar Design Contest

For too long, the idea of “performance” has been linked to consumption, noise, and pollution. But with the need for climate action more crucial than ever, a new form of performance is needed. One for the electric age.

The brief

Pure, progressive performance.

This is the ethos of Polestar. These three words capture the essence of being a progressive, sustainable brand, with a purist design approach, and a focus on creating performance electric experiences for its customers.

For the 2022 Polestar Design Contest the theme is “Performance”.

The 2022 contest brief is to design a Polestar that is about the experience of performance, and the advanced technical story that enables this in a sustainable way.

The paradigm has shifted from the high-consumption performance of the 20th century. This design must embody that shift. Both the experience, and the technical aspects of the design, need to be described in an accompanying 200-word text.

This year, there will be two winners. One for exterior, one for interior.

A returning aspect of the Polestar Design Contest is the coaching and support. Shortlisted contestants will receive guidance and feedback in remote sessions with Polestar designers throughout the contest.

In addition, and quite uniquely, we will make the winning design into a full-size model, if car-sized or smaller. This model, a merging of the winning exterior and interior designs, will then be presented on the Polestar stand at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2023. We want to encourage, support, and celebrate innovative design, and the people who realise it. What better way to do that than to give a full-size model of their creation centre stage at one of the largest automotive shows in the world?

• Format: 1920×1080 px, jpg or png
• Maximum 2 composition boards (multiple views, sketches, renders, inspiration images)

The prizes

This year’s contest will have two winners. One for exterior design, and one for interior design, along with an honourable mention. The exterior and interior design winners will have their designs merged into one with the help of the Polestar Design team. The resulting design will then be realised as a full-scale model, with a digitally rendered interior, which will be displayed at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. The winners will also be invited to attend the motor show, will travel and accommodation covered by Polestar. The honourable mention will receive a tablet and other equipment to help them in their design career.
